Over 200 swimmers from 14 clubs took part in Lewisham’s annual Saxon Crown Future Champions Gala on Sunday 22 June.
The competition was hosted at the Downham Health and Leisure Centre and was attended by young swimmers aged 9-13 years from Lewisham, Greenwich and Bromley.
Lewisham’s rising swim stars, Sian Benmhamedji, from Fairlawn Primary School and Joel Levine, from Brockley Primary School, both gave outstanding performances picking up four golds and two silvers for Lewisham.
Sian won the top girl trophy for the 11-years-old category and picked up three gold medals for the butterfly, freestyle and breast-stroke.
Joel, also aged 11, picked up a gold medal for the breast-stroke and two silver medals for the backstroke and freestyle.
Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, who was there on the day to give his support, said: “A big congratulations to everyone who took part but especially to Sian and Joel who saw off some tough competition this year to achieve such great results."
“Events like this show just how much talent there is in the borough and justify our investment in expanding and improving our swimming pools. Our aim is to have five top-class swimming facilities in different parts of the borough fror everyone to enjoy.”
The Saxon Crown Swimming Club also picked up three gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals for the eight relay events.
