Sir Steve Bullock, the Mayor of Lewisham, has condemned today’s closure of the Post Office on Burnt Ash Hill in Lee.
Today’s closure is expected to be followed by two further Post Office closures on Hither Green Lane and New Cross Road on Monday, 30 June 2008.
Commenting, Sir Steve said: "This is completely unacceptable. The Post Office only announced their intention to end these services last month. Since then the Council has been actively exploring alternative ways to ensure the services currently provided would continue. We have been in discussion with the Post Office and are in the process of looking at the various options and their feasibility. I am really frustrated by the sheer speed of these closures. We have had no time to consider alternative arrangements.
“I have always been extremely unhappy about the decision to close these Post Offices but I thought at least we would be given enough time to find a way to ensure some continuity of service.
“The decision does not take into account the interests of local people and I know it will be condemned by councillors of every party in Lewisham.
“However, as I have said before, this battle is not over yet. I will continue to look at what further options are open to us, including legal avenues, and investigate other ways to see how services might continue."
