To celebrate Olympic Day on June 1 and in support of the London 2012 Olympic bid, the Bridge, Wavelengths, and Ladywell Leisure Centres held a ‘Community Day’, offering a wide range of activities for young people and families for just £1!

Councillor Alyson McGarrigle, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “The Community Day was a great success with hundreads of young people and their families enjoying a fun day out at a minimal cost. The Centres offered a wide and exciting range of sports/activities for various age groups and abilities. From badminton to Brazilian football, there was something for everyone.”

Alison Mowbray, Olympic Silver Medalist attended the rowing competition at the Bridge and put some up and coming young rowers through their paces.

The Community Day was sponsored by Lewisham Council and Parkwood Leisure, who work in partnership to provide leisure and sporting facilities at the Bridge, Ladywell Leisure Centre, Ladywell Arena, Forest Hill and Wavelengths.

Kevin Stanley, Area Contract Manager, Parkwood Leisure, said: “This was a fantastic day, a great celebration of the London 2012 Olympic Bid, encouraging everyone to try a wide range of activities that they might not normal participate in."

Some of the day’s highlights included a rowing competition for over 16s at the Bridge, the lucky winner of which received a 6 month gym membership, junior gym sessions for young people aged between 14 and 16 at Ladywell and the Bridge, trampolining at the Bridge, and adult and children’s swimming classes at all the venues.
