Lewisham's prospectus for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, “Making the 2012 Games Count”, was launched by Lewisham’s Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, on 1 Feb 2010.
The launch took place at the Territorial Army and Army Barracks in Grove Park, which is also home to one of Lewisham’s five official London 2012 pre games training camps.
Several sports people attended the event together with the Mayor and Councillor Chris Best, Cabinet Member for Community Services. These included: swimmer Giles Long, triple Paralympic gold medallist; local resident Conrad Williams, member of Great Britain 4 x 400 metres relay team; and Davoud Etminani member of the GB Taekwondo team.
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will generate various opportunities for Lewisham. The prospectus explains how local community groups, residents and organisations can harness these opportunities.
Some of the ways people can get involved are to:
- provide accommodation for some of the 2012 visitors to London; offering bed and breakfast, rooms to let, hotel rooms and hostels.
- train as official tour guides.
- become sports coaches or train as sports officials.
- register as volunteers for the London 2012 Games.
Lewisham’s Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, said: “When London hosts the Olympic Games in 2012, more than 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries will visit the capital to compete.
“They will bring fans and supporters from across the world, which will create a huge legacy and massive tourism for London.
“The opportunities for Lewisham that will arise from the Games are vast.
“For us it’s a chance to show off Lewisham and we hope the spirit of the Games will inspire people to be more active and pursue new hobbies and sports."
