Local cooker business told to clean up its act

Lewisham Council has successfully obtained a Court Order to ensure a local ‘white goods’ business cleans up its act.

Lewisham Council had received numerous complaints about the poor trading standards of local business, Discount Cookers, on Rushey Green in Catford.

Lewisham Council has received 70 complaints about Discount Cookers since the beginning of 2007. Complaints range from goods sold in an unsatisfactory condition and not fit for purpose, to supplying goods that did not match the original description.

Lewisham Council obtained an Enforcement Order at Bromley County Court under Part 8 of the Enterprise Act 2002. The order was obtained against Peter Smith, registered owner of the business, for breaches of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 as a retailer of electrical domestic appliances and gas cookers.

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “We are very pleased with the result of the court action taken against Discount Cookers. Customers should be able to get what they pay for from a retailer, and for it to be safe and fit for purpose."

“The Court Order means that Discount Cookers will have to improve its service to customers and the quality of goods that it supplies. The Council will continue to monitor Mr Smith’s business activities and will consider taking further action against him if he breaches the Order.”

The business had:

  • failed to replace/repair goods that were faulty, or which did not correspond with their description
  • failed to deliver goods, and
  • failed to deliver them at the agreed time or within a reasonable time.
