Lewisham reach the Gothia World Youth Cup Final

A boys’ team of under-14-year-olds from Lewisham and Greenwich Schools fought off over 250 football teams from around the world to reach the final of the Gothia World Youth Cup held in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The boys from Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy, Forest Hill School, Bonus Pastor Catholic College, Crown Woods School, Thomas Moore School and Eltham Green School competed in five days of preliminary matches, including three matches on one day, in order to qualify for the final.

However, in the final on 19 July, they came up against the Dallas Texans, a very strong team from the USA to whom they conceded defeat by 3:0.

Rob Bromley, the teams coach, said: "The success these boys achieved needs celebrating. Their behaviour, sportsmanship and talent was exceptional at all times and they did the whole country proud. I'm really pleased with their performance."

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: "What a fantastic achievement. I’m delighted and extremely proud."

"In these times when young people are so often presented in a negative light, it’s important to highlight examples of positive behaviour. And, without doubt, this is a great example."

"Well done and congratulations to the boys, their families and everyone who supported them."
