The best ever GCSE results across Lewisham schools were confirmed today with the release of official figures by the Government.
The figures show that in 2009 almost two in three pupils achieved five or more GCSEs at grade A* to C. Figures have now increased year on year for the past six years.
When passes at grade A* to C in English and Maths are included progress in Lewisham outstrips that across the country as a whole over the past three years. Results have gone up by 6.3 percentage points since 2006 (when 40.7% achieved five or more passes at grade A* to C including English and Maths) compared to a rise across the country of 4.5.
Two schools, Northbrook School and Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy, have seen results go up by 21 percentage points during that time, and are among the most improved schools in the capital this year. Catford High also broke the double figure mark with a ten percentage point increase over the past three years.
The performance of four Lewisham schools put them in the top quarter of all similar schools across the country. They are Bonus Pastor, Forest Hill, Prendergast Hilly Fields and Haberdashers ' Aske's Hatcham College.
Cllr Robert Massey, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, welcomed the news: “Schools with effective leadership deliver results and we have plenty of examples of those in Lewisham.
“We will continue to do whatever it takes to raise standards. We will be innovative, we will make sure our schools are working together effectively and we will embrace new models of teaching and learning to give Lewisham’s young people the very best start in life.“
