Gas cylinder safety

Lewisham Council and Lewisham fire service are urging residents and businesses to correctly dispose of unwanted propane gas cylinders commonly used for barbecues, patio heaters and camping equipment.

All propane gas cylinders that are not in use should be returned back to the suppliers or left at a civic amenity site where they can be stored safely until collection.

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “The safety of our residents is paramount and we want to ensure that any accidents involving propane gas cylinders are avoided. Propane gas is extremely flammable and can become explosive if stored incorrectly.

“If anyone knows of any abandoned or unused cylinders please ensure they are disposed of safely at Lewisham’s Reuse and Recycling centre or report them to Lewisham’s street cleaning service on 020 8314 7171.”

The Councils Reuse & Recycle Centre is located at Landmann Way, off Surrey Canal Road, New Cross, SE14 5RS.

The opening times are:

April 1 - September 30
Sunday to Friday 8am-7pm
Saturday 8am-12noon
Bank Holidays 8am-7pm

October 1 - March 31 (except December 25)
Sunday to Friday 8am-4pm
Saturday 8am-12noon
Bank Holidays 8am-4pm

Cylinders should be brought to the site during opening hours and should not be left at the Reuse & Recycling Centre without the knowledge of the supervisor.
