Lewisham Council is opening a new purpose-built pottery studio and two new classrooms on 21 April at the Brockley Rise Centre, SE23.
The design and development of the pottery studio was developed with students and tutors and will be well equipped with four kilns, 14 wheels, a bright working space, glaze room and a resources room with a library of pottery books and IT facilities.
Three pottery teachers, each with a wealth of experience in teaching and making pottery, will be helping students to develop personal ideas and look at contemporary and historical pottery from different countries and cultures.
Once opened, courses delivered by Community Education Lewisham (CEL), will range from short tasters to City and Guilds and these will be available at different times during the week. There will also be five Saturday courses, plus week-long intensive courses in May and in the Summer.
Students can learn the art of throwing, sculpting, coiling, slab building and press-moulding. They will also learn decorating techniques and processes using slips and glazing.
The project has been developed in partnership with the Learning & Skills Council who provided 90% of the funding from the national ACL Capital Fund.
Anyone wanting more information about pottery courses available in the borough can contact Lewisham Council’s Arts service on 020 8314 3280. Details can also be found in the CEL prospectus available in libraries or visit www.cel.lewisham.gov.uk
