Lewisham to mark national Armed Forces Day 2009

Lewisham will mark the first national Armed Forces Day with a civic service led by Mayor Sir Steve Bullock at the Garden of Remembrance in Allerford Road, Bellingham on Sunday 28 June 2009 at 3pm.

The event is a chance for Lewisham residents to join the nation in showing their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community that have served and continue to serve the country.

Armed Forces Day takes place on 27 June and, in line with local authorities across the country, Sir Steve raised the official flag outside the Town Hall on Monday 22 June 2009.

Sir Steve said: “The men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, are public servants of the highest calibre. They carry out vital roles that provide for the safety and security of us all.

“We must never forget the debt we owe them.

“I hope as many Lewisham residents as possible are able to join us at the service on Sunday to honour them.”

The Mayor will be joined by the leaders of the political groups at Lewisham Council, Lewisham’s Representative Deputy Lieutenant, Colonel Jane Davis, Lewisham MPs Bridget Prentice and Jim Dowd, and Reverend Clive French, Vicar of St John the Baptist Church in Bromley Road. Also in attendance will be representatives from the Royal British Legion and other veteran associations in the borough.
