Exercise on referral

The Lewisham Exercise on Referral Scheme provides an exercise programme for people with specific health conditions.

Who is eligible

The scheme is for men and women over 16 who are registered at a Lewisham GP surgery and suffer from one of these:

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • depression
  • arthritis
  • asthma
  • stress
  • weight problems.

How it works

If you are eligible, your GP can refer you to the scheme.

You will receive a free personal assessment with a qualified instructor, who will develop an exercise programme that's just right for you.

Together you will talk through what you want to achieve and how the instructor can support you.

The exercise classes have a small charge, but you will be told in advance what those charges are.

Your programme might include:

  • workouts in the gym or a walk in the park
  • line dancing
  • yoga
  • aqua aerobics
  • aqua jogging
  • swimming
  • pilates
  • t’ai chi
  • fun keep fit classes
  • circuit training.

Your instructor will keep you motivated and make sure you are making progress. All you have to do is turn up and keep to the programme! There’s no pressure, just encouragement all the way.
