The Everyday Swim scheme, set up by the Amateur Swimming Association aims to get more people swimming with a total of 8 pilot schemes running throughout the country. This prestigious scheme was awarded to Lewisham Council and is one of only two schemes running in London.
The focus in Lewisham will be placed on three main groups who will be specifically encouraged to take part in swimming related activities. They are:
- children and young people
- older people
- black and minority ethnic communities.
The scheme was launched in Lewisham on Friday 14 September at the Bridge Leisure Centre, and attended by the Mayor of Lewisham, Steve Bullock and Everyday Swim Ambassador Duncan Goodhew.
Partners from throughout the Borough and across London gathered to hear about the new initiatives that have been developed over the first few months of the project, and meet some of the local people who will be instrumental in driving forward the changes to make swimming more accessible to Lewisham residents.
Guests were also introduced to some of the other new swimming schemes and projects that are being introduced throughout the Borough.
Duncan Goodhew summed up his thoughts on the days event:
"Having trained in the Borough for the Olympics, it's great to see that Lewisham is part of Everyday Swim. The project is offering some fantastic new opportunities for the people of Lewisham. And with such a great team I feel sure Everyday Swim Lewisham will bring many more people into the pool."
