Telegraph Hill Park

Green Flag logo

On the 11 June 2005 the park was officially reopened by Steve Bullock, mayor of Lewisham following major works to restore the park to its former glory. The Council, in partnership with the 'user group', had successfully bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for finance.

The restored Telegraph Hill Park features a new children's playground, a dog-free lower park, new tennis courts, the inclusion of a second former lake, new boundary railings and footpaths. The former toilet block has been refurbished to incorporate a public toilet and park keeper office. A mobile kiosk offers a range of refreshments during the summer months.

The park is in two sections, with the upper park offering magnificent views over London. It takes its name from the semaphore telegraph, which was placed on the summit, some 160 feet above sea level, by the Admiralty Board. The news of the victory of the Battle of Waterloo was passed to London via this station. The park is a 'key' park patrolled by on-site park keepers. The lower park is designated a dog free park and is locked at night, however the upper park is open 24 hours a day to allow access for dog owners.

The park was awarded the prestigious Green Flag award in 2005/6 designed to recognise and reward standards of excellence in parks and green spaces.
