A groundbreaking £0.5 million project in Deptford funded by Lewisham Council and the London Development Agency has transformed a disused road salt depot into a new park and is removing contamination in the adjacent Sue Godfrey Nature Park. The Ferranti Park, situated opposite the new Laban International Dance Centre, was officially opened by the Mayor of Lewisham in June 2004.
The park is named after Sebastian Ferranti, who planned the design and building of the London Electric Supply Corporation’s Deptford Power Station, the world’s first large-scale electricity operation. He went on to establish the principle of the national grid. The name was chosen by a local resident in a competition.
The park was awarded first prize in the Urban Green Space section of the 2005 Local Government News Street Design Awards.
