London was granted the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games on 6 July 2005.
As one of the closest geographical neighbours to the host boroughs, Lewisham represents a gateway to the games and the capital.
| Together, the five gateway boroughs of Lewisham, Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Havering and Redbridge have produced their vision of what the games and paralympic games will mean to our part of London. You can read this vision in Next Stop 2012. |
The Olympics and Paralympics represent a great opportunity for the Lewisham borough. The games will include around 30,000 athletes and officials, coaches and members of the Olympic and Paralympic family from over 200 countries. It will also be supported by around 20,000 media representatives, 7,000 sponsors, 60,000 operational staff, 70,000 volunteers and the equivalent of 500,000 spectators per day.
There has been plenty of preparation in Lewisham with more to come. These include:
A four-year cultural festival will accompany the games and Lewisham plans to play a part in this, contributing to events, exhibitions and educational activities.
