James Lawman

(born c. 1750 - died 1827)

Local connection

Lived locally and signed the Lee Petition of 1814.

Biography

At the time of the Lee Petition James lived at 2 Old Lane House. He had been a butler in Baron Dacre's day and was steward to Lady Dacre.

He later managed the Dacre Estate for Mr Roper. James married Catherine Bows (c.1761 – 1819) from the Dacre's Welsh estates. He lived on the farm attached to the mansion on the opposite side of Brandram Road for many years.

James died in 1827 aged 78 and is buried in the Old Churchyard, where he is described as being of Blackheath.
