The Smartcard offers a safe, secure and convenient way of accessing different services offered by Lewisham Council without having a wallet full of cards.
Essentially a plastic card containing a computer chip, like a bank card, the Smartcard will give you access to library and transport services, and very soon ‘cashless’ parking, payment for school meals, access to sport and leisure facilities, and a flexible way of making small payments for minor transactions.
How to access the service
As part of a pilot project, smartcards are available at Catford and Lewisham Libraries for new members (or if you want to update your current card). You need to apply in person as we need to take a photograph for the card.
FAQ
How do I use a Smartcard to access a council service?
At the point where you receive the service, you give your Smartcard to the assistant and they insert the card into, or touch the card over, a reader. The secure information stored on the card is then read by the computer system attached to the card reader. Your details are authenticated and your transaction is completed.
What does a Smartcard currently do?
- act as a library card. The Smartcard will replace your existing library card in time
- act as a travel pass. The Smartcard uses Oyster® technology, Transport for London’s new ticketing system.
What if I damage my card?
Please take your damaged card to the place where you were originally issued with a card. They will arrange for a replacement to be issued.
What happens if I move house?
Please inform each of the services on your card of your new address – e.g. the library, your leisure centre and Transport for London.
What if I my Smartcard fails?
Please call the helpdesk on 0845 601 9027 immediately.
