Abolition 200 - finding out more

A dedicated government website has been launched for the bicentenary. It contains information on the history behind the abolition, events happening throughout 2007 and how government is tackling the legacies of slavery.

Search for your ancestors on the library edition of Ancestry.com. All the UK censuses from 1841 to 1901, plus births, marriages and deaths. Available in all Lewisham Libraries only.

Anti-Slavery International founded in 1839, is planning a range of activities and resources around the bicentenary, seeking to raise awareness of slavery past and present. These include publications, an exhibition, a video, education materials, and campaigns on slavery worldwide.

The history of the British Caribbean is explored in this online exhibition through government documents, photographs and maps dating from the 17th century to the 1920s and discovered during a cataloguing project at The National Archives of the United Kingdom

March of the Abolitionists which is a National Project for the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade. There will be two walks - the first a 250 miles journey from Hull to Westminster from March 1-24 and the second journey linking the former slave ports of London, Bristol and Liverpool from June 4 - July 11.

An interactive site that allows you to explore and interact with virtual ghosts from our past, telling of their experiences as slave traders, sea captains and slaves, who passed through the ports of Liverpool and Bristol. The Dark has been commissioned specially for DCMS's Culture Online

Understanding Slavery encourages teachers, educators and young people to examine the history and legacies of the transatlantic slave trade through museum artefacts.

William Wilberforce, son of Hull, led the long and arduous campaign against the slave trade, which resulted in the abolition bill in 1807, a turning point in British history.
