Lewisham provides countless opportunities to enjoy the performing arts. Venues include:
Broadway Theatre
What other theatre can claim to have sheltered people during the Blitz, hosted the World Concertina Championships in 1947 and be the spiritual home of Maya Angelou? Since it opened in 1932 and was refurbished 70 years later, the Broadway is the much-loved heart of the borough’s entertainment scene.
It boasts an impressively diverse mix of programming as befits a borough as multi-cultural as Lewisham with performances in both its intimate studio theatre and 800 seat main stage. Since 2002, it also has full disabled access.
The Albany
The Albany, in the heart of Deptford, is more than a theatre. Home to 18 community and arts organisations, it is a multi-use performing and digital arts venue, working with many diverse, local communities.
The Royal National Theatre project, The Art of Regeneration, has been working with the Albany for over three years, developing a range of arts education projects for young people. It also contributes to the Albany's ongoing programme of theatre, music, clubs and comedy.
The Brockley Jack
The Brockley Jack is an intimate performance space adjacent to a friendly pub. It regularly stages new works by local playwrights.
George Wood Theatre
The George Wood Theatre is the principal performing space for Goldsmiths College where there is a vibrant and expanding drama department. Goldsmiths also offers theatre and drama courses as part of its Professional and Community Education (PACE) programme.
Youth Theatre and Amateur Dramatics
You can express yourself through theatre at any age. The borough boasts a wealth of opportunities, from one-day workshops to longer term courses.
For children and young people, Lewisham Youth Theatre, Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, Second Wave, Make Believe Arts and Montage Theatre Arts, among others, all have thriving programmes.
Montage Theatre Arts also offer courses for adults of all ages at their Brockley venue. College Park Players and Capital Theatre Company are two of the flourishing amateur dramatic companies in the Borough.
