Music

Lewisham is an exciting place to be for anybody who is interested in music. From classical concerts to indie gigs, there is plenty to see and hear. There’s also a diverse range of choirs, bands and orchestras for all ages.

Venues

Blackheath Halls provide a broad programme of concerts from major classical, pop/rock and folk artists. Part of the renowned Trinity Laban group, its students give regular free recitals. 

The Albany in Deptford presents top rock, pop, urban and world music acts. The extensive programme means there is always a gig, club or activity to enjoy. Heart n Soul receive national recognition for their club nights showcasing artists with learning disabilities.

The Broadway Theatre in Catford is an established venue for top class tribute bands and regular matinee concerts with special discounts for older people. Midsummer Opera give regular concert performances.

A number of churches host classical concerts including St Paul’s in Deptford (St Paul’s Sinfonia), St Bartholomew’s in Sydenham (Sydenham Music Festival) and St Margaret’s in Blackheath (Blackheath Choir).

There are also lots of informal music venues round the borough, including pubs, clubs and community centres.

Festivals

The annual Sydenham Music Festival held in May/June is a chance to see quality concerts in the south of the borough.

Goldsmiths, University of London holds an annual student showcase, Pure Gold. Performances span the musical spectrum from hip-hop to jazz, classical to contemporary electronica.

Young people

The Midi Music CompanySecond Wave and Lewisham Music Service provide excellent opportunities in anything from music production to steel pan playing, as well as more traditional instruments, orchestras and singing.

Rolling Sound designs and delivers inspiring music technology courses, some from their state-of-the-art customised bus!

Take part

Why not join a choir? Blackheath ChoirLewisham Choral Society and Raise the Roof Singers (at the Horniman Museum) meet and perform regularly.

If guitar, bass and drums is more your thing, try one of the courses at Felix School of Rock. Lewisham Concert Band and St Paul’s Sinfonia provide further opportunities for musicians.

Blackheath Community Orchestra, based at Blackheath Halls, is the perfect place to revive your instrumental playing. The Horniman Museum offers regular African drumming and music appreciation courses.
