Lewisham and the arts

The arts are at the heart of Lewisham. The borough supports engagement and participation in arts activities for every age and ability as well as festivals and events such as People's Day. It is home to the award-winning Laban contemporary dance conservatoire, the Albany performing arts venue, the Broadway theatre, the Horniman Museum and Blackheath Halls. 

More than 2,000 artists and almost 900 creative industries (such as musicians, designers and filmmakers) are also based in Lewisham.

Lewisham Arts Service

The Arts Service supports and promotes artists and arts organisations in the borough across all disciplines by:

  • nurturing networks and partnerships
  • giving advice and information
  • running grants schemes
  • giving free marketing support
  • regularly funding the major arts organisations
  • supporting participation and engagement.

Arts Service vision

Our vision is to make Lewisham a creative borough with a thriving arts sector, vibrant communities and active residents.  Strategic aims have been identified in order to achieve this vision, which which are detailed in our new Arts Strategy.
