Squatting is when someone occupies an empty or abandoned property which they don’t own or rent, and without the owner's permission.
Although squatting is not against the law, it is illegal to get into a property by breaking in or damaging windows and doors.
Shelter, the housing and homeless charity, give advice and information on squatting (external site).
Squatters in council homes
Empty council properties are usually awaiting repair, redecoration or re-letting. We are keen to make sure they stay empty so that someone on the waiting list has the opportunity to find a home.
For this reason, we greatly appreciate any information that will help us combat squatting in council properties. Any contact will be strictly confidential.
The laws on squatting are complex and we cannot simply evict a person who is squatting. However, if you are aware of squatters in a property that you know should be vacant, please contact your local housing office so we can start legal action.
