How much do I have to pay?
There is no charge for labour. There will only be a charge if the handyperson needs some materials to complete the job (for example grabrails and handrails). We do not charge for very small items such as tap washers, screws and nails. And we provide smoke detectors and low-energy lightbulbs free of charge.
Do I have to be a pensioner or registered disabled to qualify for help?
You need to be at least 60 years old, disabled, or vulnerable. People may be vulnerable due to physical or mental health. This could extend to people under 60 who need to come home from hospital after an operation. If you are unsure, please contact us as we are always happy to offer advice.
I need my home adapted as I can no longer get up the stairs or into the bath. Can you help?
We can fit a grabrail if that would help you to get in or out of the bath. We can fit a handrail to help you get up and down the stairs. The handyperson scheme is unable to assist with major disabled adaptations. Contact the Occupational Therapy service on 020 8314 7777 for assistance.
I used this service three months ago. Can you help me again?
There is no limit to the number of times you can access the service. However, during periods of high demand, we will give priority to people who have contacted the service for the first time, or who are in urgent need of assistance.
I'm worried about strangers coming into my home. How will I recognise the handyperson?
The handyperson will show you his Council identification badge which you should always check before letting them into your property.
When you book an appointment, we will tell you the date and time of the visit, and will confirm this in writing. You will always be notified if these details change. We can also set up a security password which the handyperson can use when he calls to your property.
Each handyperson travels in a van with the Handyperson logo clearly displayed on each side.
If you are still unsure about a caller's identity, do not let them in. Close the door and phone us to check that they are genuine. Our handyperson will not mind waiting outside whilst you do this. Your safety and wellbeing is our primary concern.
Do I need to arrange a parking permit for the handyperson's van?
No. Our handypersons already have parking permits.
Why do you ask so many questions when I phone to book an appointment?
We need to find out full details to make sure we provide you with a reliable, appropriate and effective service.
By asking questions, we can find out what tools and materials the handyperson will need. We may also be able to offer other services (such as the installation of smoke detectors) at no extra cost.
