Here you can find out how council rents are set and the methods you can use for paying.
As a tenant you are responsible for keeping your rent payments up to date, otherwise you may lose your tenancy with the Council. If you are having trouble paying your rent, you may be able to apply for housing benefit.
Rent payment options
We provide as many payment methods as possible.
If you have a bank account, you can pay by any of the following methods:
Via the internet
You can make a payment with debit and credit cards at our secure online payments site.
By Direct Debit
Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay your rent. The rent due is automatically deducted from your bank account on a weekly, 4 weekly or monthly basis. If you would like to set up a direct debit please contact your local housing office or telephone 020 8314 9311 to make the necessary arrangements.
By standing order
Once set up, your bank will automatically transfer your rent payment to the Council. You only have to change your standing order if your rent changes.
In person by credit card/debit card/cash
You can pay using cash, credit or debit card in the cash office.
Rent from salaries and pensions
If you work, or did work for the council you can have your rent deducted from your pay or pension.
By telephone
You can call our payment hotline on 020 8690 8707 and make a payment over the telephone, using either a credit or debit card.
You can also use payment cards to pay your rent by cash or cheque at post offices, Lewisham Town Hall and Giffin Street Access Point. You can also pay by cash only at local stores and garages where you see the PayPoint sign.
For all queries, please contact your local housing office.
