Disputing decisions

If you have received a decision and you think it is wrong, please call 020 8690 8444 or visit one of our offices immediately.

Explanation letter

After you call us, we will review the decision and let you know within ten working days whether or not it is correct. If we are unable to give you a decision we will tell you why and give you a time when we will be able to provide an answer.

If you still disagree with our decision, or you do not understand how or why we have made a decision:

  • you can request a written statement of reasons
  • and you can appeal against our decision.

How to request a statement of reasons

A statement of reasons provides more details regarding how we arrived at our decision. Please contact us in writing within one calendar month of the decision you are querying.

How to appeal against our decision

You can appeal if you think that our decision is wrong or if you believe that we have applied the regulations governing the Housing Benefit Scheme incorrectly.

Please write to us within one calendar month from the date of our explanation letter.

Your letter must set out clearly your reasons for disputing our decision. Please include any supporting documentation.
