Alcohol, drugs and substance use

Below are useful services to deal with issues surrounding drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

Community Drug Education Project (CDEP)
CDEP aims to provide reliable and accurate information on drugs and drug use in a balanced way, by providing drug education sessions and drop-in resource centres, as well as displays and resource stalls at local events. The service is available to young people, parents/carers and community members.

Community Education Workers provide advice, information and education on drugs to young people and their parents and carers through drop-in services, attending community events and outreach in youth clubs.

CDEP also offers comprehensive training and satellite advice/information services to young people community members and professionals around substances and harm minimisation.

Positive futures
Positive Futures is a multi-agency project, which is co-ordinated by the Millwall Community Scheme. The project aims to use sport and recreational activities to reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and substance misuse amongst young people in selected neighbourhoods. Through sports and music, the project aims to engage young people that are at risk of using drugs or are currently using drugs, and offer them alternative lifestyle choices.

Football and sports coaches are trained in basic drugs awareness and deliver sports and recreational sessions alongside interactive workshops with Drug Education Workers. During the course of the three-year project, which was launched in November 2003, young people are trained in coaching skills, so that they can train others and work towards a meaningful career.

Agencies are welcome to refer ‘at risk’ young people to this project, which will be based in North and South Lewisham on housing estates and at sports centres.

Turning Point ACAPS – Lifestyle Options Project (LOP)
LOP provides support and a range of opportunities for young people aged 11 – 25 who may be experiencing problems with drugs and/or alcohol.

Project workers and counsellors offer a holistic service by increasing awareness among young people and their families of the impact of drugs and alcohol use and misuse on individuals, family and the wider community; supporting young people to try realistic alternatives to crime and drugs; helping young people improve and enabling young people to access new activities.

LOP accepts referrals from all agencies and welcomes self-referrals through its drop-in services and outreach activities.
