Respite care

Does someone look after (‘care for’) you? Are you a carer? Both carers and the ‘cared for’ can benefit from our day respite, residential respite and flexible breaks.

When a care relationship is not based on shifts and normal working hours but is continuous for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, a break is not a luxury but an essential.

Studies have shown that people with a caring role (carers) are more likely to have increased levels of stress, ill health and mental health problems.

Lewisham’s Social Care and Health’s respite care service may be able to help.

Day respite can be provided to offer short periods of respite in a range of different ways:

  • at home
  • in day centres
  • via adult day care resources.

Who is eligible?

You are a carer if you provide regular and substantial unpaid help to someone who is frail, or disabled, or mentally or physically ill, and who cannot manage without your support.

Anyone who undertakes a caring role may be able to access respite care services.

Find out if we can help you - ask if you can have an assessment. For more details and information about how to contact us follow this link to the care assessment web page.

Payment for services

We do have a charging policy for home care and residential care services. How much you will pay will depend on what benefits, savings, or income you have. There is no charge for sitting services in the home to give a carer a break.
