Residential Care

Residential care homes in Lewisham provide accommodation, meals and personal care for older people, people with disabilities, or people who are unable (for whatever reason) to manage at home.

Levels of residential care vary from home to home across the country. But the Government defines the standard you should expect as the kind of care you would receive from a competent and caring relative.

This will include - help with eating, washing, bathing, dressing and toilet needs; and caring for you if you become ill.

Residential care does not include nursing care.

If nursing home care is recommended, then the appropriate directorate in Lewisham Council has to agree to this.

Who is eligible

A decision to recommend a place for you in a residential care or nursing home will only be made after a full assessment of needs.

How to access the service

When choosing a home, it is important to make sure that you choose one that will be right for you both now and in the future.

You can get advice and information to help you make this important decision from:

  • your social worker or care manager
  • a district nurse
  • a health visitor
  • your family doctor.

Residential care and nursing homes are now regulated by the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the single, independent inspectorate for all social care services in England.

The Commission’s role includes registering care services in each local council area that are required to meet the national standards set by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
