Benefits and other financial support

As a parent there are number of benefits you may be entitled to depending on how much money you earn. Some of these are provided by Lewisham Council, and others are provided from central Government. Have a look at the links below to see what you night be entitled to.

  • Job seekers allowance: a benefit paid to people who are capable of and are looking for work or who are working less than 16 hrs per week.
  • School related financial support: including free school meals, clothing grants, and support for those wishing to enter into higher education.
  • Child benefit: this a tax-free monthly payment to anyone bringing up a child or young person.
  • Child tax credit: this is a means-tested allowance for parents and carers of children or young people who are still in full-time non advanced education or approved training.
  • Help with affording childcare: if you're going back to work and you've got children, you can get financial and practical help with childcare.
  • Housing benefit: this is a scheme to help people with their rent. If you have a low income and you have savings of less than £16,000 you may be eligible.

  • Maternity and paternity benefits: information about rights for employees who are parents or who are expecting a child, including maternity and paternity pay.
