Who can foster?

Many different people become foster carers and they come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and circumstances. Foster carers need qualities such as patience, tolerance, flexibility and the energy it takes to foster our children and young people.

To apply to foster it doesn’t matter whether:

  • you are single, married or divorced
  • you have a disability
  • you are gay or lesbian
  • you are of any race or religion
  • you work or are unemployed
  • you rent or own your home
  • you already have children.

What is important is that you have the time and space in your life for a child who may be demanding. You will need to show that you can care properly for children and are willing to undergo preparation and training for the tasks fostering will involve.

It is unlikely that someone will be considered if:

  • they do not have the time needed for fostering
  • they do not have adequate space
  • they do not live locally to Lewisham Borough
  • if they are pregnant, have a child under the age of one, or are undergoing fertility treatment
  • they are experiencing serious financial problems
  • they are planning to move house within the next six months
  • they and their partner work full time and both wish to continue to do so
  • they have suffered a significant loss within their household over the last 12 months, such as separation or the death of a spouse or child
  • as a couple they have been in their present relationship for less than two years.

We do however consider each application individually.

People will not be considered for approval if:

  • they or any member of their household has a serious criminal conviction
  • their accommodation is not permanent, such as a short-term or seasonal tenancy
  • they already foster for another local authority or agency
  • they have applied to adopt a child and are waiting for approval
  • they have a child of their own being looked after by a local authority.

We know the task of fostering is at times difficult and challenging. However, our carers tell us that it is rewarding and satisfying to see a young person grow, develop and achieve in their care.
