Support for foster carers

We offer an extensive range of support to enable you to carry out the crucial task of fostering. We understand that fostering can be demanding and we want to ensure you feel valued and supported in your role.

Social work support and supervision

Lewisham social workers provide excellent advice and support to our foster carers. Once approved as a foster carer you will have your own social worker who will be there to help you manage the challenges of fostering. They are available to help and support you through any problems and to ensure you are providing the best care for the child.

Support groups

We have a range of support groups which meet regularly and are a good way to meet other foster carers. These include:

  • general support group
  • men’s support group
  • black carers support group.

Out of hours and emergency duty

Out of office hours there is always a social worker you can call, all night and at weekends. For emergencies we have a duty team who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you are never on your own when fostering.

Training

A full and comprehensive training programme is provided for carers. This on-going programme covers a wide variety of subjects from basic to advanced level. You will be expected to attend a minimum of 5 days a year once approved as a foster carer. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other carers and to develop your skills and learning at the same time.

Membership of fostering network

Once you have been approved we will pay for your membership to the national foster care network This provides regular support, newsletters and independent advice and representation.

Support also comes from the Lewisham Foster Carers Association (LFCA)

Mentoring

We run a mentoring scheme, where new carers have a mentor who is an experienced foster carer, to offer support and advice.

Financial

You will receive a weekly allowance according to the child or young persons age. This allowance covers the full cost of caring for the child. There is also a reward element in recognition of the skills, experience and time involved in fostering. This allowance should not be relied on as an income and you will need to demonstrate other means by which you support yourself financially. These payments do not affect any state benefits you may be receiving.
