Childminding

A childminder is anyone who works at home caring for other people's children under eight years of age - usually whilst the parent works or is at college.

There are more than 400 registered childminders in Lewisham. All childminders must be registered with OfSTED.

Choosing a childminder

We can provide details of childminders in their local area who have current vacancies.

We will also send you a leaflet advising what to look for and what to ask when you visit a childminder's home.

Meeting your needs

We will try to find a local registered childminder who can meet your needs.  For example, you might want a childminder who:

  • can provide vegetarian meals
  • will collect from a particular school
  • has experience of caring for children with special needs.

Paying for childminding services

Financial arrangements are a private matter to be agreed between parent and childminder.

However, we strongly advise that parents sign a contract with their childminder. We provide childminders with a standard contract for this purpose.

Find further advice on the Ofsted website.

Find a local childminder on the ChildcareLink website.
