A childminder is anyone who works at home caring for other people's children under eight years of age - usually whilst the parent works or is at college.
There are more than 400 registered childminders in Lewisham. All childminders must be registered with OfSTED.
Choosing a childminder
Early Years officers are able to provide parents with details of childminders in their local area who have current vacancies. We will also send you a leaflet advising you of what to look for and what to ask when you visit a childminder's home.
If you have a particular need or preference (for example you would like a childminder who can provide vegetarian meals, a childminder who can collect from a particular school, or a childminder who has experience of caring for children with special needs), then we will try to match up your needs with the services of a local registered childminder.
Financial arrangements are a private matter to be decided between parent and childminder. It is, however, strongly advised that parents sign a contract with their childminder, and the Early Years Service provides childminders with a standard contract which can be used for this purpose.
Further helpful advice for parents can be found on the Ofsted website.
