Paying for care

You may have to pay a charge for the social care services you receive. This will depend on your income and the cost of the services.

We use guidelines called ‘Fairer Charging’ to work out how much you will have to pay for the care you receive.

After you have had an assessment of your needs, you will be visited by a trained member of the financial staff who will make a financial assessment. You may like to have a member of your family or a friend with you when we visit. We will write to you before we come to tell you when we would like to visit.

To work out ‘Fairer Charging’, that is, how much you will have to pay for your care, we work out what income you have and how much you need to live on. To do this we:

  • list together all the services we have agreed you need
  • work out the actual cost of all these services
  • work out your income and expenses including your housing costs.

From this information we can work out how much of the cost of the services you will need to pay for. The Government has said that everyone should have at least as much income as the basic Income Support level with an additional amount on top.

Similarly, each year, the Government sets the amount of savings you can have before you are asked to pay the full cost of the services you receive. We will help to make sure you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled.

We will write to you with details of what, if anything, you will have to pay.
