Reduce waste while you shop

  • Use cloth bags or strong carrier bags from the
supermarkets and re-use them each time you go.
  • Buy loose fruit and vegetables instead of pre-packaged ones on plastic trays and wrapped in plastic – this will cut down on the packaging waste.
  • Only buy as much as you need, so that you don’t end up throwing food away. Plan meals to avoid waste.
  • Buy in bulk if you can, to cut down on the packaging. This can save you money too.
  • Buy concentrated products, such as fabric conditioner. They use less packaging but last just as long.
  • Buy refills. Refills are sold in lighter, smaller packaging so create less waste.
  • Don’t buy disposal or one-use products like razors and face wipes.
  • Prepare more meals at home instead of buying
takeaway or convenience foods, which usually come with lots of packaging.

Buy recycled - close the loop

Buy recycled products whenever you can. Buying recycled products contributes to the demand for more recycled products.

This will encourage more manufacturers to use our recycling, which will in turn save even more resources, reduce pollution and protect more people’s health.

As the market for recycled products grows, the cost of the products is likely to fall.
