Dispose of large items

This section gives advice on how to dispose of unwanted large items such as furniture and computers.

Re-use or recycle

If your large household items such as fridges or TVs are no longer of saleable or usable quality, you can take them to our re-use and recycling centre.

Large item collection service

If you're not able to take large items to the re-use and recycle centre yourself, you can ask us to pick the items up for a small charge.

  • or pick up a recycling sticker from your local library or AccessPoint in Laurence House, Catford.
    • Put the sticker on your mattress.
    • Put your mattress out near your refuse bin on the evening before your general refuse collection day.
    • The refuse collection team will alert our mattress collection crew, who will come and collect the mattress within 3-5 working days.

Charged service for other items

We will collect a maximum of three household items such as three-piece suite (which is classed as three items), carpets, chairs or bed for a charge of £15. Fridges and freezers can be collected for a charge of £30 each.

The general rule of thumb for what we will collect is: if you would take it with you when you move house, it is likely to be suitable for this service. We cannot collect:

  • domestic waste, either loose or bagged
  • gas bottles or fluid containers (for example, drums)
  • sheds or greenhouses
  • bags of rubble
  • fence panels
  • concrete posts
  • car/motorbike parts
  • garage doors or large gates
  • window frames or doors
  • asbestos
  • wire fencing and large fire surrounds
  • general builder's waste

How to pay for the service
Either pay in cash at the Town Hall or by debit/credit card (at the Town Hall or over the phone on 020 8314 7171).

Preparing large items for collection
You don't have to be at home when we come to collect - just leave it outside your home.

Below is a list of general points to help you to prepare you large items for collection.

  • One carpet must be manageable by two people, otherwise it must be cut into pieces, rolled and tied.
  • Carpet does not include underlay. This is a separate item.
  • One wardrobe does not mean a full bedroom suite.
  • Items should not be filled with other rubbish.
  • Only items listed will be removed, any additions must be done on a separate request.
