Commercial waste services for schools and colleges

Lewisham Council offers a free recycling service to all schools and colleges in the borough, plus a free composter. We can also provide a refuse collection service.

Recycling services for schools

Recycling collections are offered free to schools. You can save money on your trade waste agreement by recycling all you can.

Paper, cardboard, cans, glass and plastic bottles can all be recycled at school.

If your school doesn’t currently have recycling facilities, please phone our Waste Initiatives Officer whose contact details are below.

If you have no existing recycling facilities we will arrange to come and visit the school.

We will discuss with you:

  • what materials you want to recycle
  • how many recycling bins you require
  • what type of recycling bins would suit you best
  • where the bins are best positioned for you and our crews.

Smaller recycling containers are also available free for individual classrooms.

If you want to increase your existing recycling facilities we will arrange this with you over the phone. Just let us know how we can help you recycle more at school.

Refuse services for schools

All schools are required by law to have a trade waste agreement, just like any other business.

Schools have a 'Duty of Care' to dispose of their waste via a licensed waste carrier. This is set out under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act, 1990.

For further information, follow the link to our commercial waste collection service on the right of this page.

Composting in schools

Lewisham schools are entitled to a free compost bin from Shannon’s Garden Centre.

Simply give our Waste Initiatives Officer a call. We will then let Shannon’s know that you will collect your free compost bin from them. You can find contact details for our Waste Initiatives Officer and Shannon's Garden Centre below.
