Deptford today

Intercultural city

In 2005 the London Borough of Lewisham joined the international Intercultural City project, which seeks to better understand the value of cultural diversity and the benefits of cross-cultural interaction in cities.

This report focused on Deptford and highlighted Deptford's strength as well as possible areas for improvement.

The Future of Deptford Town Centre programme addresses the actions set out in the intercultural city report.

Strengths of the area

  • Close proximity to central London - eight minutes by overland to London Bridge Station
  • Area rich in history and heritage –  St Paul’s Church, Deptford High Street, Deptford Creek, historic Albury Street
  • Diverse, multi-cultural and vibrant area
  • Deptford has one of south London's busiest street markets, with many small independent retailers
  • Thriving base for creative industries
  • Wide range of community facilities including Tidemill School, The Albany and Wavelengths Centre and Library
  • Lively community arts programmes delivered at the Laban Centre and the Albany.

Room for improvement

  • Lots of untapped potential for social economic and physical development
  • Poor quality environment in places, including the major public spaces
  • Dilapidated and hard-to-access station
  • Some streets and places feel unsafe and poorly lit
  • Need to improve the balance of parking between residents, shoppers and businesses
  • Scope to increase the number and diversity of local residents, to support local services and shops
  • Thriving institutions like Tidemill School held back by outdated premises.
