The Council views Deptford and New Cross as one of the key opportunity areas for regeneration within the borough. A programme of works is now underway that will, over the next five years, transform the centre of Deptford. Alongside this, other schemes are being developed and delivered including a masterplan that focuses on the longer-term redevelopment of several large under-used industrial sites in the north of the borough, and a strategy for improving pedestrian and cycling routes.
Additionally, the New Cross Gate New Deal for Communities is working in partnership with the local community to deliver significant regeneration of the New Cross Gate area.
Deptford and New Cross are areas rich in cultural and multicultural history. At the same time, they are rapidly gaining a name for themselves as a hub for music, arts and culture, with The Times in 2007 reporting that Deptford is “becoming the cultural hub of southeast London” and This is London being heard to ask, “Is New Cross the new Camden?”
