The Council promotes the clean up and re-use of brownfield or potentially contaminated land wherever possible.
To achieve this aim many potentially contaminated sites in the borough planned for redevelopment will be dealt with through the application of specific planning controls. These are outlined in the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Follow the link on the right to the Office of Public Sector Information for more information about this act.
If you are redeveloping brownfield or potentially contaminated land in the borough then we recommend that you read our short guides for developers to help you meet our planning requirements.
Important information for planning applicants and consultants
The Environment Agency has drawn up procedures for dealing with land affected by contamination, which are called the 'CLR 11 Model Procedures for the Management of Land Contamination'.
You must comply with CLR 11 at all stages of development.
Find out more about these procedures by following the link on the right to the Enviroment Agency website.
Site Investigations
You or your appointed contractors must contact the Council's Pollution Control team using the details below before you carry out any intrusive investigations at a development site.
Doing so will ensure that your development is not delayed as a result of unsatisfactory methodology or sampling design.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your contractors and sub-contractors are aware of the standards which must be met when undertaking intrusive investigations or the clean-up of contaminated sites.
