The conservation and urban design team work together with the planning service to determine planning applications in conservation areas, applications for new development and applications for listed building consent across the whole borough.
If you live in a listed building or conservation area you should check whether you need planning permission before starting work. This is particularly relevant if you are considering altering wall surfaces to provide better insulation, replacing windows or installing renewable energy devices. English Heritage (external website) has produced a range of leaflets, called Framing Options, which include advice on draught proofing traditional windows.
The team also develops urban design frameworks and conservation area character appraisals which help to guide development in sensitive areas.
Trees
Trees in privately owned gardens in conservation areas are protected by law and notifications to carry out works to trees and tree preservation orders are handled by this team.
