Frequently asked questions
Do I need consent to carry out work to trees on my property?
Yes, if the tree is in a conservation area or subject to a tree preservation order or planning condition.
Can I cut back branches overhanging my property?
Yes, but only back to the boundary. However, if the trees are within a conservation area or subject to a tree preservation order or planning condition, planning consent is required.
Who is responsible for looking after street trees?
Street trees are the property of the Council, and are maintained and planted by the Council’s Greenscene Service. For information on street trees, contact Environmental Services, whose contact details are at the bottom of this page.
My neighbour's tree is blocking my light, can I chop it down?
No, the tree is the property of the owner of the land on which it grows and you can only cut off the branches which overhang your boundary. The restrictions mentioned above also apply if it is in conservation area or is subject to a TPO.
My neighbour’s hedge is blocking out my light. Can the Council take action on my behalf?
Before considering a High Hedges complaint you must have taken all reasonable measures to resolve the situation, such as requesting the hedge owner to reduce its height before the Council will take formal action.
A hedge is defined as two or more evergreen or semi-evergreen trees in a line.
