St Mary’s conservation area

St. Mary's church

St Mary’s Conservation Area was designated in 1976 and focuses around St Mary’s church, a Grade II* building which is probably the oldest building in the borough.

The conservation area was extended in December 2006.

This location is the birthplace of modern Lewisham as settlement developed along Lewisham High Street, the old coaching road from the Kent countryside to central London.

The conservation area is particularly special as it contains a cluster of Edwardian civic buildings such as the former library, fire station, fire station, police station and swimming baths as well as late Victorian terrace housing.

Do I need planning permission?

The Council made an Article 4(2) direction on 10 January 2007 which means that planning permission is required for external alterations to housing along Ladywell Road and Church Grove.

This applies to all elevations visible from a public place. Further details will be published on this website when available.

If you are considering any works, please contact the planning information desk for advice.

The Council has also drafted a character appraisal and management plan for the conservation area.
