Culverley Green

Two doors on a houseDesignated in 1990, Culverley Green Conservation Area is mainly an Edwardian residential suburb built around the turn of the last century. Its grid-layout is enhanced by wide tree-lined streets. Shops, and notably the former cinema dating 1913, line Bromley Road; this is the major thoroughfare and once the main coaching-route between London and Kent and sits at the edge of the conservation area.

Housing is mainly early twentieth century with some late-Victorian villas remaining in Canadian Avenue. Building detail, which gives the area its special interest, includes carved and moulded capitals and window surrounds, terracotta window dressings, sash windows, solid timber doors and stained glass.

The Culverley Green Conservation Area Character Appraisal sets out the character of the area which the Council seeks to preserve and enhance. The information contained within is used in the determination of planning applications in the area. Omission of any element in the appraisal does not preclude its importance.

You can download the character appraisal on the 'preserving the character of Culverley Green' page - follow the link on the left. The document is also available from the Planning Information Service whose contact details are below.

Do I need planning permission?

The Council has a duty to preserve or enhance the character of its conservation areas. In order to achieve this, there are more planning controls in conservation areas. This varies according to the conservation area you live in.

Article 4 directions are served to withdraw permitted development rights in conservation areas. In Culverley Green, an Article 4 direction covers Culverley Road, Penerley Road, Bargery Road, Inchmery Road, Canadian Avenue and parts of Bromley Road. This means that planning permission will be required to change windows, roof coverings, front doors, render elevations, create hardstandings, remove garden walls or make other such alterations.
