There are two scholarship and bursary schemes available for people living in Lewisham who wish to study at Higher Education establishments: the John Smith Scholarship and the Mayor's New Cross Award.
Higher Education - John Smith Scholarship
The John Smith Scholarship was set up in 1998 to provide funding to students who wish to study the Bar Finals or Legal Practice courses.
Only one scholarship is awarded each year to the student who demonstrates their worthiness against set criteria.
As only one scholarship is available, covering fees and a limited amount of expenses, this is a fiercely competitive area. Students are advised to seek alternative funding prior to applying for assistance
Who is eligible
Students must be studying one year full-time at a college recognised by Lewisham.
This encompasses all standard institutions. Students studying part-time are not considered.
How to access the service
If you wish to apply you should seek an application form by either:
- tel: 020 8314 6223 (this line is open Monday and Friday 13.30 to 15.45 and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 09.30 - 15.45)
- by calling into the Laurence House Accesspoint service.
Applications close in May and so it is essential to apply early if you wish to enter the consideration process.
The Mayor’s New Cross Award
The Mayor’s New Cross Award is a bursary for students at Goldsmiths College, and was created to commemorate the 14 young people who died in the New Cross Fire in 1981.
It is an annual award of £20,000 which is divided equally between one male and one female student. It will be awarded to eligible students who have strong academic ability and potential to study for an undergraduate degree at Goldsmiths.
The awards will be given to a male and a female student, who are current or former students of schools and colleges in Lewisham. Eligibility is based on strong academic ability, and lack of financial means.
Those who have since left school or college in the Borough and weren’t financially able to go to university but have the potential to do well, will also be considered.
Each academic year Goldsmiths will contact the secondary schools and FE Colleges in our borough, inviting the Head Teacher to submit names of prospective candidates for the award.
