Statement of special educational needs

A statement of special educational needs is a legal document setting out a child’s special educational needs and the provision to be made to support the child at school.

The description of the child’s special educational needs and the special provision to be made will have been written based on information provided in the reports gathered as part of the statutory assessment. The statement is in six parts:

  • Part one: provides basic details of the child such as name, date of birth, address, name and address of parents
  • Part two: describes the special educational needs of the child including what the child can and cannot do.
  • Part three: sets out the extra support or provision to meet all of the special educational needs that have been described in Part two. It will include the objectives that are to be met and the monitoring arrangements that the school will undertake.
  • Part four: names the type of school suitable for the child and the name of the school that the child will attend. Parents have a right to express a preference for a local authority maintained school that they would like their child to attend.
  • Part five: describes any special needs that are not educational. For example, a medical or social need
  • Part six: sets out the provision for any non-educational need
