A new school for Lewisham

Hot topicAt a meeting of the Mayor and Cabinet on 8 November 2006 the Mayor decided:
  • that Lewisham Bridge Primary School site, rather than the Ladywell Leisure Centre site, should be agreed as the new proposed location for a new secondary school in the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme
  • that we should begin a consultation process about:
    a) the new secondary school being on the Lewisham Bridge Primary School site and incorporating primary provision to become an all-through 3-16 school
    b) the new school being incorporated into a new hard federation with Prendergast School.

We consulted you on these proposals between November 2006 and January 2007 and reported the outcomes to the Mayor and Cabinet on 31 January 2007.

If you would like to read a detailed version of the proposals please download the full consultation document.

Summary of the proposals

Two children in a science lessonIt is proposed that a new all-through (3 to 16 year old) school will be built on the site of Lewisham Bridge Primary School instead of the Ladywell Leisure Centre site and that the school will open for its first pupils in September 2010.

The school will have state-of-the-art facilities and will offer a broad curriculum based on the National Curriculum.

There is current approval for the establishment of a new secondary school at Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2009; depending on the results of this consultation we may ask for that approval to be revoked.

Why Lewisham needs a new school

There is a shortage of secondary school places for children in the north Lewisham area. The proposed school will include:

  • a mixed (boy/girl) comprehensive secondary education for students aged 11-16, with four forms of entry
  • primary provision with 1 form of entry
  • a nursery.

See our frequently asked questions page for more details about the proposals for a new school in Lewisham.

What happens next?

The consultation process ended on 15 January 2007. We paid close attention to all views expressed during the consultation about the nature of the new school in Lewisham and the proposals have been developed with these in mind.

Earlier approval for the establishment of a new secondary school at Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2009 was revoked in April 2007. We are now pursuing procedures for the establishment of a new all-through school at the Lewisham Bridge Primary school site, to open in September 2010.
