Building Schools for the Future

A teacher and pupils at Northbrook SchoolBuilding Schools for the Future (BSF) is the single largest investment programme in education for over 50 years and aims to transform schools and secondary education.

About the BSF programme

The government is committed to spending £2.2 billion pounds per year over the next 15-20 years to replace, rebuild or renovate every secondary school in England. It is a partnership between the public and private sector facilitated by a government agency.

BSF is based on the premise that state of the art school buildings can improve educational standards and have a positive effect on everyone who uses them. Investment in school buildings and computer technology will radically improve the quality of education provision for all children in the country and create high-quality resources for the whole community.

BSF in Lewisham

Lewisham has been awarded £186m and is carrying out the one of the most ambitious programmes in the country.

The Council has also secured an additional £20m to invest in special needs provision. This will mean that every secondary school and all the special needs facilities in the Borough will be either re-built or refurbished over the next decade.

A further £1450 per secondary school pupil has also been secured for investment in ICT.
