Council questions

How to get involved

Local government needs local people. We are determined to make Lewisham the best place to live work and learn. Residents can raise issues and get involved in local decision-making in a variety of ways, not just by voting in elections.

Ask a public question

Any resident, business rate payer or local government elector of Lewisham Council can ask a 'public question' to make an enquiry or raise an issue at a formal meeting of the Council attended by all 55 members.

These questions can be about any council service. If there is an issue you think is important or where you believe the council can make improvements you may want to bring it to the attention of the Council through a public question.
Public questions will be reported to council meetings but must be submitted at least 15 days before a meeting. Every question received will be acknowledged.

Ask a question

  • email your question to kevin.flaherty@lewisham.gov.uk
  • write to the Head of Business and Committee at Lewisham Council 2nd floor Civic Suite Catford SE6 4RU
  • fax you question to committee service on 020 8314 3111.

You will receive an answer to your question by email 5pm the night before the meeting. You can then attend the Council meeting and ask a supplementary question at that meeting. The Chair will indicate when you may ask your question but please note that it is not an opportunity to make a speech. You may ask the Cabinet member about a point of clarity or a further question on the subject that you have raised arising from the answer provided to you in advance of the meeting.

Your question may lead to an investigation or review of the issue you raise, and could be very important for other residents affected by the same issue.

Questions will be published on open agenda

In submitting a public question you must be aware that questions, the responses and any other related papers will be published at the meeting and will be available to the press and public.

Questions must relate to public services

Public questions must relate to services that are offered by Lewisham. This ensures that meaningful action can be taken to address any issues that arise from the process.

Please note

The council has a separate complaints procedure to deal with individual casework or complaints.
