The Young Mayor

Lewisham young people elected their fifth Young Mayor on Wednesday 15 October 2008.

Miguel Gutierrez Astudillo is Lewisham’s Young Mayor following elections that attracted a record turnout. Natalie Powell-Davies, aged 14 from Sedgehill School was elected Deputy Young Mayor.

The Young Mayor is in office for one year and has a budget of £25,000 to spend on things to make life better for young people in Lewisham.

Lewisham was the first council to have a directly elected Young Mayor. It was started in 2004 by Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham.

The Young Mayor is supported by a dedicated Young Advisory Group. Members are drawn from a variety of community and young peoples groups.

All have a chance to influence and advise the adult Mayor and Cabinet.

Any person between the age of 14 and 17 who lives, works or studies in the borough of Lewisham can stand as a candidate for Young Mayor and any person aged between 11 and 18 can vote.
